What Does a Travel Advisor Actually Do

(That Search Engines Can’t)

This is a question I get asked regularly, followed closely by another: Aren't travel agents a thing of the past?

The answer to the second question is a clear NO. The internet may make it possible for anyone to research and book trips online, but in an ever-changing world filled with endless information, travel advisors are more valuable than ever.

Before I dive into all the services a travel advisor provides, let me share a real-world example from my own career:

I had a customer approach me a few years ago, when I still lived in Germany, ready to plan her family's summer vacation. They wanted to do something different. Not the usual vacations in Italy, Spain, Greece, etc. that are popular with German families. They wanted to see something new, experience culture. I suggested Oman to them, a destination they hadn't ever considered. About halfway through the trip I received a call from them informing me that one of their children had an accident and they needed to come home early. I got on the phone with the tour operator and their travel insurance and we quickly figured out their options, while they had time to take care of their child. We got them back home within about 48 hours. Once home my customer came by the agency I worked at at the time. She told me that apart from the accident, they had the best trip ever. They absolutely loved Oman and the tour I booked for them and plan to return to do and finish the tour.

This is a perfect example of the value a travel advisor can bring to a trip — destination expertise, planning guidance, and support when things don’t go as planned. And that’s only a small part of what I actually do.

So What Does a Travel Advisor Actually Do?

I save you time

Instead of spending hours comparing options, I narrow everything down to the best choices for your preferences, budget, and travel style.

I help you avoid costly mistakes

Not all deals are good deals. I check fine print, locations, logistics, and timing so you don’t run into unpleasant surprises.

I design trips around you

No two travelers are the same. I match destinations, accommodations, and experiences to what you actually enjoy.

I handle the details

Flights, transfers, timing, confirmations — I make sure everything works together smoothly.

I’m there if something goes wrong

Travel doesn’t always go perfectly. When issues come up, you don’t have to handle them alone.

Travel planning is easy to start online — but it’s smarter when you don’t do it alone.
