For the first post in this blog, I have a super exciting topic to talk about - well ok, maybe not super exciting but definitely super important.
Let's talk about your driver's license and the new Real ID requirements.
Let's dive into this important topic, so you don't get grounded!
Imagine This: You're at the Airport, Ready to Fly…
You’ve got your bags packed, your flight is about to board, and you’re cruising through the airport with that excitement that only comes with a long-awaited trip. You step up to the TSA line, excited to get through security and to your gate. But then, the agent asks for your ID—and, uh-oh, your driver’s license doesn’t have that all-important star in the top corner.
Suddenly, your plans are put on hold, and you’re stuck in line trying to figure out how to move forward. Not exactly how you want to start your vacation, right?
Now that we’ve got that worst-case scenario out of the way, let’s talk about how to avoid it. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID to board domestic flights. It’s a small change, but a very important one. Let's make sure you are REAL ID ready.
So, What Is REAL ID and Why Should You Care?
A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state-issued ID that meets federal security standards. It’s a step up from your regular driver’s license and has a star in the top right corner to show it’s REAL ID-compliant. This star indicates that your ID has been verified against federal records and is considered more secure.
It’s required for boarding domestic flights and accessing certain federal buildings, like military bases or government offices.
BUT what if you don't have one?
The good news is you can still travel with other IDs. Your U.S. passport or passport card will be accepted at airport security, so you’re good to go if you already have one of those.
The only catch? You’ll need to carry your passport with you each time you fly, and you’ll have to make sure it’s up-to-date.
Where to Get Your REAL ID and Important Information
Getting your REAL ID is straightforward. You’ll need to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Before you go, make sure you have the following documents:
Proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport)
Proof of Social Security number (e.g., your Social Security card or tax document)
Two proofs of state residency (such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement)
Once you have these, you can apply for your REAL ID. Make sure to check your state's DMV website for specific details and requirements, as they can vary from state to state.
Important Deadline:
May 7, 2025: After this date, you’ll need a REAL ID or another TSA-approved form of ID to board a domestic flight. Don’t wait until the last minute to get yours!
For all the detailed information on what you need to get your REAL ID, check out the Homeland Security website.
TSA-Approved IDs:
If you’re wondering what types of IDs are acceptable for airport security, you can find the full list on the TSA website. This includes REAL IDs, passports, and other forms of ID that meet TSA standards.
